After the Strait of Sicily and our spectacular night view of the eruption of the Etna volcano, we sailed as far as Naples and Capri, which two names have (or had) much more significance to Europeans than to Americans.
To our great regret, we on the "Karel Doorman" did not put into port in Italy, but returned to nearby Malta for a few days, then sailed on across the ocean-deep western basin of the Mediterranean to Valencia, on the East coast of Spain, across from the Balearic Islands.
